Poet's Corner: Maya Marie Bass

Open Doors
When I was two, I escaped
the prison of my crib
to the Beloit mall parking lot
just beyond my backyard.
I pulled on my Barbie robe and
put on bunny slippers for a

journey to the fresh air that
teased me through the screen door.
My mother has no idea how I got out;
only that she left her child sleeping and
then a police officer knocked on
her door with her smiling baby.
We used to laugh about it, but
Amber Alerts have taken away the
humor and the days when we
beat back the summer heat
by propping our back doors open.

DIVA Tunes: Lena Horne

Lena Horne, who is a notable singer and actress, was born June 30, 1917 in Brooklyn, New York. In 1963 she became a Honorary Member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. Like many African American women in the arts during the early years of her career, she fought what seemed like a never ending battle. She was refused rooms at hotels where she was performing and she was invited to parties only when she was asked to provide entertainment. Lena Horne was a trooper throughout her entire career, which didn’t end until the year 2000. With all of the odds against her, she fought back and eventually reached the pinnacle of her profession. In 1940, she became the first African American to tour with an all white band, which she considers to be the beginning of her success as a singer. Lena Horne has been featured in numerous musicals and films, including her role as Glinda the Good Witch, in The Wiz. She also received a Tony Award for distinguished achievement in the theater for her one-woman Broadway hit Lena Horne: The Lady and Her Music, which opened in 1981.

Celebrity Spotlight: Wedding BELLS!

Wedding Bells have rung in the honor of Khloe Kardashian and Lamar Odom!! Who would have ever thought the knot would be tied between these two?? Rumors say they had only been dating for about a month!! Time waits for no one so when you’re in love, you’re in love RIGHT?? Have you checked out the ring?? It is a slammin 2.5 carat platinum band. Very NICE!! Of course it was a celebrity-style black tie affair at a private residence in Beverly Hills. Among the guests were Lauren London, LaLa Vasquez, and Kobe Bryant. Ironically her sister Kim caught the bouquet at the reception. We wish her and Lamar the best. Who knows after Kourtney delivers in December, maybe Khloe will be next….

XU Spotlight: Megan Duronslet

With a mother who was a dancer, Megan Duronslet was born dancing in the womb. From a very young age, she had the abilty to perform starting at nine years old. At that age she was on St.Mary’s dancing team, St. Augustine’s Cheerleading Team, and she danced at church.
The love she felt for dancing at an early age carried into her more mature years at Xavier University. Her drive continued, in 2006 as a freshman, she became the only freshman to be on the Gold Star Dance Team at Xavier University. Now four years later, she is the captain for the Gold Stars. Their performances include coronation ball, a pregame performace they will be doing at the Hornet’s game during Homecoming, and community service in Hammond, Louisiana.
Before Hurricane, Katrina, Duronslet’s family owned a dance studion called Dee’s Studion. Though it has not been reopened, her goal is to reopen the studio because she wants to share her passion of dance to others. Through dance she has learned many things about herself and most of all to stay humble.

Awwww SNAP!

Celebrity Spotlight

Imagine working years toward your dream and finally reaching that first milestone of success. The moment you have been waiting for has finally arrived. It’s the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards and Taylor Swift is speechless as her name was called for Best Female Video. Going up against Beyonce Knowles, P!NK, Katy Perry, Lady Gaga, and Kelly Clarkson, Taylor had quite a competition. It was her first chance to give a thank you speech so we all can imagine how nervous she must have been. Out of nowhere, Kanye West appears on stage proclaiming Beyonce Knowles as having “one of the best videos of all time.” Many outrageous comments have been made on this moment in Award Show History. Apologies have been made and accepted but what comes to your mind when u hear the name Kanye West?? Impressions last FOREVER!!!

Glamorously Achieving Events

Poets Corner

We
Staring at your silhouette
through the veil
I love you with all my heart
desire you
beyond reason
when your stormy soul lifts
you'll find me
True
silent
In living waters
We

Holy
A high frequency of peculiar pitch
We've tried with sonar but the waves don't mix
A beautiful harmony
passionate and sweet
Another kind of sugar that won't rot your teeth
I'm not sure how the song goes
And so to God I pray
to help me play the notes right
while I practice everyday
Testify
I was dying and I knew it
I tried to fight it but I couldn't win
Then God whispered the cure to my heart
It's amazing to know that something as delicate and beautiful as faith
can cure something as ugly and chronic as sin
I am a survivor

XU Spotlight

Xavier University has many talented individuals. Greg Dixon, Music major from Houston, Texas currently holds the title of Mr. Xavier after he blazed the stage Thursday night at the annual pageant. He is a very talented individual who has been singing for as long as he can remember. He is expanding his musical talents by learning to play the piano. He has had vocal lessons while attending Xavier, but his natural talent is evident in all of his performances. A person that Greg looks up to in the music industry is the legendary Lauryn Hill. If he could collaborate with any artist on a track, it would be with Usher. Greg has done several performances on Xavier’s campus over the last couple of years. Greg has high goals set for himself and will achieve them with his hard work and passion for music.

Setting the Stage

Osceola McCarthy Adams like other African American performers of her time faced great discrimination. However, she still flourished on the big stage. She appeared in productions; such as The Emperor Jones, The Crucible, An Affair of the Skin and Romeo and Julie; along with many commercials and movies. Osceola McCarthy Adams also had the honor of directing productions at the American Negro Theatre, based in which was a New York.

While performing on stage was her passion, her true strength came from fighting for equal rights. Osceola McCarthy Adams served as an active member of the Actors’ Equity Labor Union and served as a member of the Committee for Minorty Affairs.

Sadly, Osceola McCarthy Adams passed away November 20, 1983 at the age of 83. The “Osceola Award “ which is Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. highest award for achievement in the arts was named in her honor.
